Keith Urban Speaks Out About Rehab

Country superstar Keith Urban has released a video message to his fans on his official Web site. The almost 5-minute long video shows a darker-haired Keith, sitting in what looks like a living room, speaking about his recent trip to the Betty Ford Clinic.

Urban entered the rehabilitation facilities on Oct. 19 of last year and was just released last week. He explains to fans that he initially thought he’d only be staying for 30 days, but he found he had much more than a month’s worth of learning to do.

“That first 30 days, I learned that abstinence is the ticket into the movie — It’s not the movie. So, learning about abstinence was one thing, but then there was all this other area of my life to start learning about,” he explains. “And so 30 days became 60 . . . 60 days became 90. And with each week that passed, I found myself really learning to surrender . . . especially with my career.”

The rehab stint came at a pivotal moment in the star’s career, as his new album, ‘Love, Pain and the Whole Crazy Thing’ was released less than three weeks after he checked himself in.

“It was far from an ideal time to go into treatment,” he says on the video, explaining that he missed his birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas and, of course, the record’s release. It was also less than four months after his wedding to Nicole Kidman.

“There was not a big cataclysmic event that happened right before I went in . . It was a lot of small things that were happening in my life . . . a lot of small moments that were starting to accumulate that were telling me very loud and clear that I was a long way from my program of recovery.”

Urban sought treatment in the mid-90s for cocaine addiction. His camp insists this time around was strictly for alcohol abuse.

The recovering Urban is now in Europe for promotional appearances supporting ‘Love, Pain and the Whole Crazy Thing.’ He plans to kick off a world tour in April.

Fidel Castros health perilous

Madrid, Spain Ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro has had at least three failed operations and complications from an intestinal infection and faces “a very grave prognosis,” a Spanish newspaper reported today.

A Cuban diplomat in Madrid said the reports were lies and declined to comment.

“It’s another lie and we are not going to talk about it. If anyone has to talk about Castro’s illness it’s Havana,” the diplomat said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of official policy.

The newspaper El Pais cited two unnamed sources from the Gregorio Maranon hospital in the Spanish capital of Madrid. The facility employs surgeon Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido, who flew to Cuba in December to treat the 80-year-old Castro.

In a report published on its Web site, El Pais said: “A grave infection in the large intestine, at least three failed operations and various complications have left the Cuban dictator, Fidel Castro, laid up with a very grave prognosis.”

Cuba has released little information on Castro’s condition since he temporarily ceded power in July to his brother, Defense Minister Raul Castro, until he could recover from emergency intestinal surgery, prompting much speculation and rumor in the country and around the world.

El Pais’ report, which could not immediately be confirmed, was a rare detailed description from a major media outlet about Castro’s condition.

The U.S. government had speculated that Castro could suffer from cancer - a supposition denied by Sabrido. Some U.S. doctors believed Castro was suffering from diverticular disease, which can cause bleeding in the lower intestine, especially in people over 60. In severe cases, emergency surgery may be required.

That idea was supported by El Pais, which reported that its sources said Castro had suffered a bout of the disease.

“In the summer, the Cuban leader bled abundantly in the intestine,” El Pais reported. “This adversity led him to the operating table, according to the medical sources. His condition, moreover, was aggravated because the infection spread and caused peritonitis, the inflammation of the membrane that covers the digestive organs.”

The recovery from the first operation, in which part of his large intestine was extracted and the colon was connected to the rectum, did not go well. The link broke and he released feces into the abdomen that caused another peritonitis, the report said.

A second operation to clean and drain the infected area also failed, the paper said. He was then hit with inflammation of the bile duct, an illness which has a 80 percent mortality rate, el Pais said. A prothesis made in South Korea was implanted and failed and later was replaced with one made in Spain.

El Pais said that in December, when Garcia Sabrido visited, Castro had an abdominal wound that was leaking more than a pint of fluids a day, causing “‘a severe loss of nutrients.” The Cuban leader was being fed intravenously, the report said.

Garcia Sabrido was not reachable at his home or at the Madrid hospital where he works as the chief surgeon. His secretary at his office said he was not planning to comment.

A statement attributed to Castro was released on New Year’s Eve saying his recovery was “far from being a lost battle.”

Cuban officials told visiting U.S. lawmakers last month that Castro does not have cancer or a terminal illness and will eventually return to public life, although it was not clear whether he would return to the same kind of absolute control as before.

Charles and Camilla to come to America

NEW YORK - Prince Charles is expected to pick up an environmental award during a two-day trip to the United States with his wife, Camilla, later this month, the British Consulate said Friday.

The royal couple hopes to focus on youth development, urban regeneration and environmental conservation, the consulate in New York said.

In Philadelphia on Jan. 27, they will learn about the city’s Mural Arts Program, the country’s largest public art program and one that relies a great deal on youth talent, the consulate said. They will visit with students who are studying or have studied overseas.

The couple will ride a private train that uses an electric locomotive from Philadelphia to New York, where the prince is expected to pick up the Global Environmental Citizen Award from the Center for Health and Global Environment at Harvard Medical School. Former Vice President

Al Gore, who won last year, is to be a presenter.During the trip, Prince Charles also is expected to meet with experts on urban regeneration, a topic that includes the renewal of neglected and blighted areas in cities.

It’s the couple’s second joint visit to the United States. The couple married in April 2005 and made their first joint visit in November 2005, when they paid homage in New York to the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks and stopped in New Orleans, which was still reeling from Hurricane Katrina.

A True Friend

LOVE starts with a SMILE, grows with a KISS, and ends with a TEAR. DON’T cry over anyone who won’t cry over you. Good FRIENDS are hard to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget. You can only go as far as you push. ACTIONS speak louder than words. The HARDEST thing to do is watch the one you love, love somebody else. DON’T let the past hold you back, you’re missing the good stuff. LIFE’S SHORT. If you don’t look around once in a while you might miss it. A BEST FRIEND is like a four leaf clover, HARD TO FIND and LUCKY TO HAVE. Some people make the world SPECIAL just by being in it. BEST FRIENDS are the siblings God forgot to give us. When it HURTS to look back, and you’re SCARED to look ahead, you can look beside you and your BEST FRIEND will be there. TRUE FRIENDSHIP “NEVER” ENDS. Friends are FOREVER. Good friends are like STARS You don’t always see them, but you know they are ALWAYS THERE. DON’T frown. You never know who is falling in love with your smile. What do you do when the only person who can make you stop crying is the person who made you cry? Nobody is perfect until you fall in love with them. Everything is okay in the end. If it’s not okay, then it’s not the end. Most people walk in and out of your life, but only FRIENDS leave footprints in your heart.

David Beckham To Play For L.A. Galaxy

LOS ANGELES - Bend this, TomKat and Brangelina: Becks ‘n’ Posh are coming to Hollywood. And David Beckham didn’t even have to audition to become the next American Idol. The most recognized soccer player on the planet — fashion icon, tabloid fixture, marketing giant — announced a deal Thursday to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy

“David Beckham is a global sports icon who will transcend the sport of soccer in America,” gushed Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber.Bringing free kicks, glitz and his Spice Girl wife, Beckham is leading another British invasion, hoping to do for American soccer what the Beatles once did for pop music — make it rock.“There are so many great sports in America,” the 31-year-old former England captain said. “There are so many kids that play baseball, American football, basketball. But soccer is huge all around the world apart from America, so that’s where I want to make a difference with the kids.”Beckham turned down a two-year contract extension from Spanish team Real Madrid, where his fading skills left him on the bench.

The Galaxy didn’t say exactly what they’ll pay him, but floated a figure of $250 million in salary and commercial endorsements over the five years of his contract. In other words, his move could be worth $1 million a week.

Los Angeles opens its season April 8 in Houston, but Beckham is not expected to join the team until August. His four-year contract with Madrid expires at the end of this season.

He’ll start for the Galaxy and could enter a whole new universe: His deal was negotiated over 10 days by major entertainment industry players Simon Fuller, creator of “American Idol,” and Creative Artists Agency, home to some of Hollywood’s biggest actors.

Fuller manages both Beckham and his pop star wife, Victoria — whose pal Katie Holmes (and her husband Tom Cruise) are represented by CAA.

Victoria Beckham hasn’t hidden her desire to launch a Hollywood career.

“It’s not lost on them that it’s the entertainment capital of the world and they know many people in the entertainment industry here,” said Tim Leiweke, president and chief executive officer of Galaxy owner AEG and a personal friend of the couple.

The Beckhams should fit in just fine in LA. He opened a soccer academy at the Galaxy’s stadium complex last year, and she was photographed house-hunting in the area. Their young sons carry headline friendly monikers: Brooklyn and Romeo.

Draws paparazzi like movie stars, Beckham and his wife regularly find their way onto tabloid and magazine covers. With trendy clothes and rotating hair colors and styles, he’s the epitome of the modern celebrity-athlete.

A “Bend It Like Beckham” sequel, with more than just a cameo this time?

“The first thing he needs to do is get himself a part on `The Simpsons,’” as a guest star, said Richard Laermer, a New York-based marketing expert.

Beckham’s soccer skills are only part of the equation. He’s David Beckham Inc., a multinational corporation with links to Pepsi, Gillette, Motorola and Adidas.

The United States is the last — and biggest — market where Beckham’s cult of personality has few converts. A superstar whose movements have convulsed Asian capitals and helped sell millions of European tabloids has been able to walk American streets in relative anonymity.

In Los Angeles, Beckham’s mandate calls for raising the profile of an average team in a soccer league that has little respect overseas and less recognition than the University of Southern California football team.

“I’m going out there to hopefully build a club and team that’s got a lot of potential,” Beckham said. “I think that’s what excites me.”

The Beckham effect was felt immediately: The Galaxy sold 1,000 new season tickets Thursday morning.

The team averages between 22,000-24,000 fans in its 27,000-seat stadium in suburban Carson, although attendance was down last season when the Galaxy missed the playoffs.

“They know we Latinos are filling the soccer stadiums. That’s why they want to bring stars here,” said Juan Munguia, a 30-year-old Mexican hotel cook. “I will go just to see Beckham.”

The team is anticipating changes in its fan base, especially among women.

“He appeals to so many different people,” Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas said. “There is going to be a curiosity factor. There are going to be many people who are going to come to their first MLS and first Galaxy game to watch David Beckham.”

Already in the works is a 2008 Galaxy tour of Asia, where Beckham is wildly popular. A new team logo will be unveiled this summer and the Galaxy’s owner is nearing a deal to slap a prime sponsor’s name on its jerseys.

“We will absolutely market the Galaxy as a global brand,” said Leiweke of AEG, the sports and entertainment company whose holdings include Staples Center — where the city’s resident superstar, Kobe Bryant, plays for the Lakers.

MLS changed its rules on salary caps, clearing the way for Beckham to sign the lucrative deal. The league pays the first $400,000 of player contracts. Individual teams pick up the rest of the tab for anyone, such as Beckham, who makes more than that.

Beckham, who has failed to win any major titles in 3 1/2 seasons in Madrid, said the time was right for a change.

“I’ve played now for two of the biggest clubs in the world and played at the highest level for 15 years, and now I think that I need another challenge,” he said.

Beckham will become the biggest star to play U.S. professional soccer since Pele and Franz Beckenbauer played in the now-defunct North American Soccer League in the 1970s.

Beckham has not found much success since he moved to Madrid in 2003 from Manchester United, where he won six league titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League title. He has no major trophies with the nine-time European Cup champions.

Beckham started only five of 25 matches for Real Madrid this season.

Back in London, not everyone was impressed by Beckham’s move.

“He’s rubbish,” said Steve Didcott, a consultant mulling the deal from a pub. “And if you’re rubbish, you go to the States.”

Today In The News

DENVER - A man held for questioning in the fatal drive-by shooting of Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams has grown frustrated by his arrest, his attorney said Wednesday.

Willie Clark, 23, was arrested Friday and was being held for an alleged parole violation unrelated to Williams’ slaying.

Clark’s attorney, Michael Andre, declined to say whether Clark has been questioned by police.

“We are not discussing anything related to his potential cooperation as we do not want to create a perception that could endanger his life or his presumption of innocence,” Andre said.

Police, who said Clark’s name came up in the investigation, have not called Clark a suspect but said they hoped he could provide information that could help solve the case.

Andre has said previously that Clark has no information about the shooting.

In a statement, the Broncos said members of the organization are offering a $100,000 reward through Denver Crime Stoppers for information that leads to the arrest and filing of charges against a suspect or suspects in the shooting, which also wounded two other people. The team’s reward is in addition to Crime Stoppers’ standard $2,000 reward.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said Wednesday there had been no further arrests in the case.

Williams was shot early New Year’s Day as he was riding away from a New Year’s Eve party at a nightclub in a stretch Hummer. Police haven’t said whether they know the motive for the slaying but have said there was an altercation at the club.

Andre has said Clark grew up in the same neighborhood as 28-year-old Brian Hicks, the registered owner of a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe that matches witnesses’ description of a vehicle used in the shooting.

Hicks was in jail on drug charges when Williams was shot. Hicks is also accused of shooting at a woman who was later killed a week before she was to testify against him.

Clark, on parole for an auto-theft conviction, is accused of living in a different house than the one listed in his parole agreement. Andre denied the allegation but said it could take months to clear up.

After Clark was arrested Friday, police discovered an arrest warrant accusing him of driving with revoked license, Andre said. But Clark’s attorney said the suspect in that case was actually Stephen Howard, a cousin who once used Clark’s name.

Howard, 24, appeared in Denver County Court on Wednesday and was ordered held until a judge could schedule a hearing to positively identify both men.
